Odessa Regional Medical Center was founded in 1975 by 14 obstetricians, pediatricians, and family practitioners as Odessa Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Through the years, the hospital grew and evolved into a full-service healthcare facility and the name was changed to Odessa Regional Hospital in 1995.
In June 2007, Odessa Regional Hospital purchased Alliance Hospital and changed its name to Odessa Regional Medical Center to reflect its larger campus and more comprehensive services. In 2015, ORMC acquired Basin Healthcare Center. The hospital has 225 beds and has approximately 250 physicians on staff and has over 700 employees.
Today, ORMC offers a wide spectrum of healthcare services, including advanced diagnostic imaging technology, emergency care, innovative surgical procedures, maternity care, comprehensive cardiac services and general medical care.

7a - 7p Registered Nurse Emergency Department - ED RN PRN
About the Position:
Provides professional nursing care within the Emergency Department; coordinates care planning with other disciplines. Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicates with ED physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Participates in performance improvement activities. Provides service to age range from neonate to Adult. Additional functions applicable when acting as charge nurses: Authority to make patient care assignments based upon the skill, experience, and temperament of other nursing personnel and on the acuity of the patients, ensuring patient and staff safety, assist in evaluation of unit and agency staff. To responsibly direct and precept staff members as needed in all aspects of patient care and management. To participate in quality improvement during all phases from planning to implementing and sustaining efforts, including taking corrective action if other employees fail to carry out delegated duties.

Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Responsibly directs and precepts staff members as needed/assigned in all aspects of critical care management. Participates in quality and process improvement in the department during all phases from planning to implementing and sustaining efforts".
Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.
Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately.
Accurately assigns triage categories.
Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
Ability to interpret the results of waived tests; takes appropriate action on waived test results.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of the plan of care.
Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching, as appropriate.
Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.
Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
Prepares, hangs, monitors and discontinues IV fluids.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.
Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives; maintains good employee relations and interdepartmental objectives.
Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency.
Provides resource information to other staff.
Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures in the Emergency Department.
Supervises temporary employees and employees who do not supervise; allocates and monitors work of others; leads one or more employees performing similar work.
Orients new employees to the Emergency Department.
Assists the Emergency Department Nurse Manager in the development, implementation and evaluation of performance improvement indicators to improve patient outcomes and the work environment.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, health plans and staff.
Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including neonate to adult and general population. (See Age-Related Competency)
Demonstrates ability to use EMS radio and appropriately document report.
Maintains clinical knowledge and skills for the stroke patient population. Completes on going staff educational opportunities including competencies for all levels and departments interacting with Stroke population.
About Regulatory Requirements:
- BSN from an accredited nursing program preferred.
- 18 months acute/critical care experience preferred
- Current Registered Nurse license within the state of practice.
- Current BLS Certification.
- ACLS certified within six (6) months of hire.
- PALS within one (1) year of hire.
- TNCC within one (1) year of hire.
- ENPC preferred.
- CEN preferred.

- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.

- Basic computer knowledge.
- Able to interpret basic ECG tracings.
